Southborough Historical Commission approves $250 speaker honorarium and addresses homeowner insurance concerns. Chair Kevin Miller and four members voted unanimously to pay historian Ben Haley of the Massachusetts Historical Commission for a March 15 lecture titled "Commemorating Henry Knox and the 'Noble Train of Artillery' in the Automobile Age," timed to mark the 250th anniversary of General Knox's artillery passage through Southborough. The Commission voted 5-0 for the honorarium.
The Commission also discussed insurance companies threatening to raise rates or drop coverage for properties in the Southborough Center National Register District, emphasizing that National Register listing and the Historical House Sign Program impose no restrictions on owners. Miller will revise and distribute a clarifying letter through MySouthborough, noting that only local historic districts have such authority and Southborough currently has none.
